Workshop Report: Violence against Women

Speakers:

1. Dr. Abueyad Mohamed Ahmad – Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Certified GVP Trainer, in Emergencies Membership, based in Ireland.

2. Ms. Arwa ElTayeb – Gender and Protection Specialist, FAO Certified Facilitator in GBV.

3. Dr. Mohammed Hussin Mahmoud – Lawyer and legal researcher, advisor to the Gadim Center, specialized in human rights and women’s issues.

4. Dialogue and discussion management: Ms. Fatiha.

Workshop objectives:

Highlighting the reality of violence against Sudanese women in light of the war that has been raged since April 15, 2025.

Providing awareness, psychological, health and legal support to survivors.

Discussing the challenges facing refugee women in Uganda, both in camps and in cities.

Main topics:

Situation on the ground: The war in Sudan has forced thousands of women to seek refuge in Uganda, where they face direct humanitarian conditions in camps like Bialy.

Violence in the workplace: Refugee women in Kampala experience harassment and violence due to their entry into the labor market.

Psychological and health support: Dr. Abueyad emphasized the need to provide support to survivors without blame or interrogation.

Types of Violence and Community Interaction: Ms. Arwa discussed the different types of violence and conducted interactive dialogues with some cases.

Legal Framework: Dr. Mohammed reviewed Ugandan laws criminalizing violence against women, emphasizing the strict penalties, including the death penalty and life imprisonment.

Outputs:

Recording a number of cases that require immediate intervention.

Emphasizing the importance of providing safe spaces and comprehensive support services for women survivors. Recommendations to continue these workshops and increase legal and community awareness.
