Child Protection & Safeguarding
Protecting refugee and vulnerable children from violence, abuse, exploitation, and neglect through safeguarding, child-friendly services, case management, referral pathways, rights awareness, and support for families and caregivers.
Project Objectives
1. Protect refugee and vulnerable
children from violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect, and harmful practices.
2. Strengthen child safeguarding,
prevention, identification, reporting, and referral mechanisms.
3. Improve access to child-friendly,
confidential, and survivor-centered case management and referral services.
4. Increase awareness among children,
parents, caregivers, and communities about child rights, protection risks, and
available services.
5. Strengthen the capacity of families,
caregivers, volunteers, and community structures to prevent and respond safely
to child protection concerns.
6. Strengthen
coordination and referral pathways with relevant authorities, humanitarian
actors, schools, health facilities, and specialized child protection service
providers.
Key Activities
1. Establish and strengthen child-friendly
spaces and safe mechanisms for children to access protection and support
services.
2. Provide child protection case
management, including identification, assessment, referral, follow-up, and safe
case closure.
3. Conduct child safeguarding and protection
awareness sessions for children, parents, caregivers, teachers, and community
members.
4. Train staff, volunteers, community
leaders, and caregivers on safeguarding, child protection principles, PSEA, and
safe referral procedures.
5. Strengthen community-based
mechanisms for identifying and safely referring children at risk of violence,
abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
6. Provide appropriate referrals to
health, psychosocial, legal, education, and specialized protection services.
7. Conduct child rights, prevention,
and positive parenting activities with families and caregivers.
8. Coordinate
with relevant authorities, schools, humanitarian organizations, and child
protection service providers to strengthen referral pathways and safeguarding
systems.
Target Groups
1. Refugee and asylum-seeking children,
including unaccompanied and separated children.
2. Children from vulnerable host
communities.
3. Children at risk of violence, abuse,
exploitation, neglect, trafficking, and harmful practices.
4. Children with disabilities and other
children with specific protection needs.
5. Parents, guardians, foster families,
and caregivers.
6. Adolescents, particularly girls and
other children exposed to heightened protection risks.
7. Teachers, community leaders, volunteers,
and community-based child protection actors.
8. Families
and communities requiring strengthened child safeguarding awareness and
referral support.
Expected Results
1. Refugee and vulnerable children have
improved access to safe, inclusive, and child-friendly protection services.
2. Children at risk are identifying
early and safely referred to appropriate protection and specialized services.
3. Families and caregivers have
increased knowledge and capacity to prevent and respond to child protection
risks.
4. Community-based safeguarding and
child protection mechanisms are strengthening.
5. Children, including children with
disabilities and those with specific protection needs, participate safely in
activities affecting their well-being.
6. Coordination and referral pathways
among GADIM, communities, authorities, schools, health facilities, and
humanitarian service providers are strengthening.
7. Increased
community awareness of child rights, safeguarding, prevention of abuse and
exploitation, and available reporting mechanisms.
Geographic Focus
The project focuses on refugee and vulnerable host communities in Uganda, particularly Kampala and refugee-hosting areas, including Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement and Biyale, while maintaining flexibility to respond to emerging child protection needs in other locations based on needs assessments and available resources.
