From 17–27 January 2026, Gadim Refugee Empowerment Center implemented a Safe Medical Circumcision Campaign to improve access to safe, professionally supervised healthcare services for refugee children in Uganda. The intervention reached children across Biyale, Kampala and Wakiso, while complementary humanitarian assistance supported vulnerable refugee families and orphan households.

Background & Humanitarian Context
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan, thousands of Sudanese families have sought refuge in Uganda, where many continue to face economic hardship and challenges in accessing essential healthcare services. Refugee children are particularly vulnerable, as limited household income can prevent families from accessing safe and professionally supervised medical care.
In response to these needs, Gadim Refugee Empowerment Center implemented the Safe Medical Circumcision Campaign as a community-based health and humanitarian intervention. The initiative combined access to safe medical circumcision services with complementary assistance for vulnerable refugee families and orphan households, helping reduce immediate financial pressures while promoting the health, dignity and well-being of refugee children.
Implementation & Geographic Coverage
Biyale
The largest component of the campaign was implemented at Dar Al-Shifa Hospital in Biyale, where 500 refugee children received safe medical circumcision services under professional medical supervision.
Kampala – Natete
In Kampala, the campaign was implemented at Fiona Hospital in Natete, providing safe medical circumcision services to 70 refugee children.
Wakiso
The campaign was also extended to Wakiso, where 60 refugee children received medical circumcision services at Sky Hospital.
Total Medical Beneficiaries: 630 Children
Humanitarian Assistance to Vulnerable Families
Beyond the medical intervention, the campaign incorporated a complementary humanitarian assistance component designed to support vulnerable refugee households facing significant economic hardship. In Biyale, 250 refugee families received direct assistance, including in-kind support through meat distribution as well as cash assistance to help address immediate household needs.
The intervention also provided targeted support to 150 orphan households, recognizing the heightened vulnerability of children and families caring for orphans. This integrated approach enabled the project to respond not only to children's immediate healthcare needs but also to wider socioeconomic pressures affecting refugee families.
